Alloa Tower
Alloa Tower is an early 14th‑/15th‑century Scottish tower house in Alloa, Clackmannanshire, historically the seat of the Erskine family, later Earls of Mar. It is a four‑storey rectangular stone tower with battlements and a surviving timber roof, now a scheduled monument and a public property of the National Trust for Scotland.

Massive rectangular tower of coursed rubble sandstone approximately four storeys plus attic, roughly 62.5 by 39.5 ft, with exceedingly thick walls and a crenellated parapet. A rounded corner stair-turret projects at one angle; several tall chimneys rise from the roofline. Window openings are small and regularly spaced but show later re‑fenestration. Ground-level ashlar arched doorway with a stone surround opens from a low-walled forecourt approached along a paved path, trees flanking the approach.

Alloa Tower rose in the early 14th century as part of a line of fortifications defending the north shore of the Firth of Forth, and served as the medieval residence of the Erskine family, later Earls of Mar. Enlarged with a great hall by the mid-14th century and raised to four or five levels in the 15th, it is one of the earliest and largest Scottish tower houses, with immensely thick walls and its original timber roof and battlements intact.
Mary, Queen of Scots visited John, Lord Erskine and his wife Annabell Murray at Alloa in June 1562 and again in May 1565. In 1710 John Erskine, 6th Earl of Mar, built the large mansion of Alloa House with the tower as its annexe; the house burned down in 1800 and was rebuilt by George Angus in 1834–1838 for the 9th Earl. The tower was designated a scheduled monument in 1960 and is now owned by the National Trust for Scotland.
