Penkill Castle is a privately owned Scottish castle near Old Dailly in south Ayrshire, originally founded in the 16th century and extended in later centuries. A compact L-shaped stone house dominated by an original 16th-century square three-storey tower linked to a later range, with a prominent cylindrical, crenellated drum tower rising above the roofline. A steep external stone stair climbs the gabled end, creating a serrated silhouette against the skyline. Walls are of dark local masonry with scattered tall chimneys and crenellation; the building sits within wooded, rolling hills with cultivated grounds close around the house.

The sixteenth-century tower at Penkill was built by a branch of the Boyd family, relatives of the Earls of Kilmarnock, and extended several times — a square three-storey tower that grew into an L-shaped house south of Old Dailly in Ayrshire. Heavily restored from 1857, the castle became associated with its Pre-Raphaelite visitors in the late nineteenth century.
The Boyds held Penkill to the very end of the line: the 16th Laird, Evelyn May Courtney-Boyd, was also the last, and she sold the castle in the 1980s. The American lawyer Elton Eckstrand bought and further restored it, selling in 1992 to the Scots-born Canadian businessman Don Brown; in 1993 it passed to the HTV Wales chairman and television producer Patrick Dromgoole, and it remains in private hands.
