Ponte Sant'Angelo

Ponte Sant'Angelo is a Roman stone bridge in Rome linking the city to Castel Sant'Angelo across the Tiber. It has five main arches faced in travertine and is lined with a sequence of marble angel sculptures on high pedestals; statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul stand at one head. The bridge is exclusively a pedestrian crossing providing framed views of the river and the castle.

A low, horizontal travertine deck spanning the Tiber on five broad semicircular arches with their mirrored reflections in the water; the walking surface is bounded by high travertine balustrades and a procession of ten marble angel sculptures on tall pedestals, plus two larger saint-statues at one head. The stone is pale cream with weathering streaks, the statues gleam white against sky, and the castle bulk anchors the view at one end.
