Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri is a basilica in Rome set within the surviving brick walls of the calidarium/frigidarium of the Baths of Diocletian. Michelangelo adapted the vast Roman vaulted hall into a church; later 18th-century works by Vanvitelli and others filled the interior with chapels, funerary monuments and a large meridian line. The building functions as a major civic and liturgical church in Piazza della Repubblica.

Weathered Roman brick rises in an unbroken curved plane, topped by a simple metal cross; to the right a tall semicircular thermal window, to the left a pale stuccoed annex with an ornate stone portal and green-painted wooden doors. A broad cobbled piazza and low planted stone tubs sit before the entrance, giving human scale to the enormous brick mass.
