The history of Clan Cunningham

The Cunninghams take their name from the district of Cunningham in Ayrshire. In the 12th century the lands of Kilmaurs were granted to a Norman named Warnebald, whose descendants adopted the territorial name.

Their support of Robert the Bruce brought additional lands. King James III granted Sir William Cunningham the title Lord Kilmaurs in 1462 and later the earldom of Glencairn in 1488.

In 1653 the 9th Earl of Glencairn raised an army for Charles II. After the Restoration of 1660 he was rewarded with the office of Lord Chancellor of Scotland.

From the night of the twenty-eighth of May 1941 to the dawn of the first of June, in the worst air-sea action of the Mediterranean campaign, the British Mediterranean Fleet under Admiral Sir Andrew Browne Cunningham (Edinburgh-born, fifty-eight years old, in his third year as Commander-in-Chief Mediterranean) evacuated about sixteen and a half thousand British and Commonwealth troops from the southern beaches of Crete after the loss of the island to the Luftwaffe and the German airborne division.
