What does the Cunningham name mean?
From the district of Cunningham in Ayrshire, Saxon 'cuinneag' (milk pail) + 'ham' (village).
The history of Clan Cunningham
The Cunninghams take their name from the district of Cunningham in Ayrshire. In the 12th century the lands of Kilmaurs were granted to a Norman named Warnebald, whose descendants adopted the territorial name.
Their support of Robert the Bruce brought additional lands. King James III granted Sir William Cunningham the title Lord Kilmaurs in 1462 and later the earldom of Glencairn in 1488.
In 1653 the 9th Earl of Glencairn raised an army for Charles II. After the Restoration of 1660 he was rewarded with the office of Lord Chancellor of Scotland.
